Beauty Machine
There’s no denying beauty devices are a game-changer in the at-home facial space. From a cult-favorite microcurrent face lift tool to ice globes for skin inflammation, this tech helps clients maintain their in-salon results between appointments.
Invest in this multifunctional machine and save yourself some serious salon space. With one machine, you can offer a variety of treatments that cater to all types of skin.
It’s a Microderm
One of the most popular beauty treatments around, microdermabrasion is non-invasive and entails no downtime. It exfoliates the skin to remove dead and dry cells that have accumulated over time, leaving your face looking fresh and healthy. It also helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and is ideal for those with a dull complexion.
During the treatment, an esthetician swipes a pen-like device with a diamond tip or crystals on the surface of your face to slough off the top layer of dead skin. Then a built-in vacuum sucks the loose skin and other debris away, revealing healthier and brighter skin. It also unclogs pores to help even skin tone, and stimulates collagen growth to make skin look more plump and youthful.
A microdermabrasion facial is often combined with a facial or peel for added radiance. It is also recommended as a pre-preparation treatment before special events. There are also several home microdermabrasion kits that can be used in place of professional treatments. However, these products don’t have the same results as a professionally performed treatment. They typically include a cream that contains the same crystals found in a professional treatment, but they cut out the use of a specialized tool.
Patented Spinning Discs embedded with aluminum oxide crystals exfoliate the skin’s outer layer and slough off dead, dull cells. Consistent use reveals more even skin tone and texture, reduces the appearance of dark spots, blemishes and wrinkles, unclogs pores, and enhances the absorption of your favorite skincare products by 20X.
Before beginning a microdermabrasion treatment, the technician cleanses the skin thoroughly and puts on protective eyewear. A small amount of solution is then sprayed over the area to be treated, and the handpiece is placed on the skin and moved in short passes. The suction of the microdermabrasion device will cause mild edema and redness for the first hour after a treatment, as the body rushes to replace the lost skin cells. However, this is a sign of the treatment’s effectiveness. After the initial hour, the skin will be noticeably brighter and softer.
It’s a Gua Sha
While gua sha has become a viral TikTok beauty hack, the ancient practice is actually an effective tool to reduce puffiness and promote lymphatic drainage. In fact, when performed correctly (and with the right tools), it’s said to help fight signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles, dark under eye circles and sagging skin. It also boosts circulation, allowing your face and body to naturally purge toxins. The technique, which is performed by lightly scraping the surface of your skin with a smooth stone or metal, moves lymphatic fluids and breaks down tension in your muscles, which can lead to less puffiness.
“Gua sha is used to stimulate the skin and release blockages in the flow of energy,” says NYC-based aesthetician and founder of Sunina Skin, Patricia San Pedro. “It can be done on the whole face and body, but it is most commonly done on the neck, cheeks, shoulders and torso.” The tool is said to lift your facial features, reduce inflammation and release tightness in the muscle, which in turn leads to more sculpted, toned and glowing skin.
According to TCM expert and esthetician Kim Hsu, it’s important to use the proper technique and choose the best gua sha for your needs. “The shape of the stone, which is shaped to mirror certain parts of your face, and the material it’s made from are important,” she explains. “Smooth stones like jade and rose quartz are common but you can also find ones made from stainless steel, which may be a better choice for people with allergies to the more natural varieties.”
The best gua sha tool is one that feels comfortable in your hand and is the right size and shape for the area you’re targeting. She suggests starting with the jawline and using the smaller cleft or divot in the tool to scrape along your jaw line toward the earlobes. Then gently glide the tool around your eyes and under your nose to reduce any puffiness. Next, you can move to the base of your neck and continue gliding upward.
It’s a LED Light
As the beauty industry takes more and more cues from science, there is a plethora of gadgets and gizmos on the market promising superior results in the comfort of one’s home. This hand-held device uses iontophoresis to deliver a powerful combination of cleansing, moisturizer, and LED light to elevate daily skincare routines and achieve better results with less effort.
Unlike heavy-handed Photoshop techniques that render magazine cover models and celebrities unrecognizable, the machine developed by Prof. Cohen-Or at Tel Aviv University has a more subtle effect. But it is no less striking. In fact, it might be more recognizable—at least to those who have seen it in action. In the video below, you can see a model run through the beauty machine and emerge with an almost-identical result.
